Q. The Spring/Summer 2008 campaign is a dramatic departure from the subtle makeup look of Fall/Holiday 2007. What inspired you to take such an edgy direction?

A. Fashion changes all the time- same with makeup. NARS Campaigns should always be different and surprising. Collections, in Paris especially, had a strong come back to the 1930's and 1940's. I wanted a more retro and sophisticated approach for the collection.

Q. Lydia Hearst is the featured model in this season's campaign. Why is she the perfect face for NARS, Spring/Summer 2008? How does she epitomize the brand?

A. She is the perfect face for NARS - sophisticated, porcelain skin, big eyes, thin lips. She has a very 1930's movie star quality.

Q. You create both the Spring and Summer campaigns with one photo shoot. What was your inspiration for the images this season - what overall mood and story were you trying to create?

A. The inspiration was the movie “Shanghai Express”, directed by Josef von Sternberg , starring Marlene Dietrich. It is a very exotic and sophisticated movie where Marlene looked, probably, the best ever.

Q. What does the Spring/Summer '08 image represent to you?

A. A dream - A vision of exotic beauty- Elegance and style- Interesting and sophisticated- Edgy, but classical at the same time - Old movie star quality.

Q. The new colors, and retextured classics, are absolutely beautiful together. Was there one overall feeling or mood you were trying to create with the colors? Can you divulge what the inspirations were behind the striking shades and reinvented classics?

A. Very silky textures with great shine to capture the light in the way old movies did. It makes the skin glow and the eyes sparkle. Very smoky shades that bring mystery to the eyes, and strong red for lips for extreme drama.
